A survey of nearly 2,000 UK office workers suggests the average employee works for just under three hours a day, spending most of the remainder of the typical eight-hour workday doing many things other than work, including eating, socialising, or searching online for another job.

Research suggests long workdays are not beneficial to productivity, and Amazon is one company that is experimenting with both shorter days and weeks. Last year it trialled 30-hour workweeks in which select employees began working for four hours a day, four days a week; the trial group would earn three-quarters of their normal salary but retain full benefits. Amazon hasn’t so far made public data on impact on productivity or quality of life.
