Now that the dust is starting to settle, here are some insights into what happened directly after the referendum:

  • The day after the EU referendum there was a spike in online conversations by 56%. The most common topics were: value of GBP, house price crash concerns and holiday money.
  • In the 48 hours following the result, the share of UK job seekers looking for work in other European countries was double the average in the days prior.
  • Top searches included roles in marketing, human resources, hospitality and the finance sectors.
  • Many UK job seekers also looked outside the EU. In Canada, job searches from the UK were 4.2 times higher than average, 1.9 times in Australia, and 1.7 times in the US.

Clearly these are knee-jerk reactions as the UK population was starting to rationalise the result and almost certainly should not be taken as long-term predictors.
